Wood Decay vs Dry Rot: What a Santa Clara Homeowner Can See

What visible wood decay can tell you—and what it cannot—at Bay Area fascia and siding.

The words do not set the scope

Homeowners may call a soft, dark or crumbling board “dry rot,” “wood rot” or “wood decay.” The visible condition matters more than the label. Around Santa Clara, a failed roof-edge or siding finish can expose wood to repeated wetting, while the amount of sound wood behind it remains unknown until assessed.

Look at the assembly

For fascia, the scope may involve a board edge, nearby soffit, gutter backing or a separate roof-edge question. Paint alone cannot establish that the substrate is sound. An estimate should identify access, the opening boundary, replacement material and finish. A separate qualified party may need to address an active water source.

Our Milpitas roofline project example shows opened and later finished views, from different angles—not a water test. Read the Bay Area fascia, soffit and siding guide, then request an address-specific review.
